I got discouraged I fixed it

This week will be a shared post with my subtraction fabrication course in which I use the 4-Axis Mill.

So

here we go :)

My 3/4" Dowel

aw geez had some trouble this week but nothing actually went wrong. Simply put, the machine and what i want of it are not in line with eachother.

First lets get out of the way the original oopsy... My dowels were 3/4” and who woulda thunk it, that’s too small for the chuck and this shit happened

Alright anyways here’s some better wood.

THE PLAN

I wanted to make some segments for my art toy project, essentially a figurines limb sections done out of wood. I had some pretty simple geometry

This doesn’t look even a little crazy right? wrong.

Here’s the cut done after 18 minutes.

It looks really bad? But I checked the preview and realized this is in fact what the high speed setting was gonna yield. Let me tweak some settings and see what’s gonna happen. After changing from high speed to high detail the cut time went up to FOUR AND A HALF HOURS. At this rate it would take AT LEAST 5 days of nothing but milling to do my project as i want it.
boooo!!!!

Back to the drawing board.

Fixed it not fitting lol.

I decided the model will be radically simple. Honestly after this week it will probably be lathed for further iterations for art toy. I think it’ll be prettier and more fun that way. But I decided to just do one long segment and later cut it into sections rather than each limb one at a time. This went great.

Then i decided to do the same for my torso and body parts, went pretty well. Broke my pieces out, didn’t document once, sanded them down and got my sections.

SOLDERING AND ASSEMBLY

I then got to steel soldering which I have greatly improved at! From total mess discouraged at every step to “this’ll take some time but I will achieve results!” This joint here is pretty dang tough, took no time at all, was really a relief too.

After joining some needle loops as a shoulder joint (as seen up there) and free form applying some needles it was time for assembly.

I ditched the wood parts of the legs I originally wanted, this is sooo much funnier to have the guy be top heavy, i think it also allows for less distraction from it being a Needle Based figurine, which is the point of course.
Soldering this together was so silly, my hands hurt so much now from stabs and burns but hey that’s jazz.

The head is on it’s way! i needed a slightly larger magnum needle (refer to the hands and feet) and I will solder some needle loops as stupid little eyes haha
The stance came out of complete accident and i do like it a lot. Blowout buddy coming together!

I think the only thing to do from here is… more needles. so many more needles. like go crazy with needles.
at least one iteration should!
