Joinery. I failed.

Time was not on my side this time but I made it into the shop and made the right mistakes to know exactly what to do moving forward into using this joining method to make my frame!

I. Setup

My plan was to test this Lapped Dovertail with the eliptical tenon (what is a tenon?). I think once I figure out my file workflow, using two kinds of wood would yield some pretty color results in the oval shapes :)

My file seemed to make sense*! my insert and my pocket files were aligned correctly and here we go!

*not pictured is when my original file had multiple versions and ideas turned off visually and MasterCam had them all overwhelming the screen

I measured but seemed to have an issue where I couldn’t figure out how to create my pocket without also covering my center piece? This wouldn’t be an issue for the one I would create a hole in but I didn’t know how to fix it for my insert.

Luckily, after some undocumented (im sorry future me) fiddling, I realized I had to also select the oval as a part of the path so the routing would work around it.

II. Cutty Time

Things were going well so far..

Hmm.

So for some reason my final contour, which I did make sure to create on the .nc file, was not enacted? The CNC simply stopped after the pocket. Except for the strange extra pocket on the hole cut. just confused!

As you can see, my hole is also far too large. This isn’t a tolerance issue but I think because I contoured that instead of pocketing to a breakout point, that’s why this happened. I’m going to try it with the pocket rather than contour next time. I think it’ll work.

I did not give myself enough time this week but I did try to see what happened with Sarah’s final contour as we were doing a similar cut plan. Unfortunately the CNC control pad just let us know there was an error with every .nc file she tried. I will have to investigate this further when I’m back in!
