LATHE MODE

I‘d say this week went swimmingly and I think I really like the lathe. Just working on making a simple handle.

ATTEMPT ONE

I first decided to use some of the green wood that Matthew and Elijah brought in! However, it kinda sucked. I seemed to be running into a point where the bark was just not coming off and I was getting a bit nervous to turn the speed up too much. You an see where one side got down to a nice pretty finish but the other side was just kind of shredding up, it was very wet!

ATTEMPT TWO: CORK

This time I decided to go with cork from some yoga blocks. Set up was pretty easy, just needed to cut the block in half. Here’s a first pass on one half as a comparison. Cork is ROUGH as it gets machined down.

I next added some notches to help guide my shaping the handle.

I did notice though that as it got pretty thin, the lathe’s mount for inserting the tool mount became a bit troublesome to position close enough. May need a walkthrough on it? Not sure.

VOILA Isn’t it UGLY hahahaha

SANDING

Nice.

And in really no time at all look at this fun thing! Could be the leg of a little stool or ottoman too.
