11. FINAL SUBTRACTION PROJECT!

A WIN AND A LOSS SO WE’LL JUST CALL IT A WIN

After failing entirely at turning a bowl, I decided to get some cheaper, less green material from amazon unfortunately but there just isn’t time otherwise. I think that fucking sucks and I don’t want this to be an obligatory statement, It Fucking Sucks That I Have To Use Amazon Dot Com Because Of Time Constraints.

So Here We Go!

I guess bowl blanks come in little bricks so I had to band saw my edges so I didn’t run into the lathe hell I did previously.

Next was of course screwing in the center and rounding it out. Was chunky for a while and then suddenly oh so very smooth and perfect.

Next would of course be chiseling out the bottom of the bowl. I have to make sure I add a little underside so that the four jaw chuck can grab onto it. I’m sure I could make a more cup-like bowl and use the modifier chuck that Ben made but... I don’t want to. I want to use the tools I will more likely have when I get my own Lathe.

Ba-Bam

Inside of the bowl time

Hooray! That’s really good lookin all sanded up and such! There’s little chips and dings here and there, not entirely sure how. I believe that may be the quality of the wood? Also our chisels for rounding out these areas are getting dull and I”m not sure how to properly sharpen them. This will become a problem later.

Now for some finishing so it can be food safe.

I skipped ahead 24 hours but this is just some Walnut Oil!

I got a hankering for bowl making. What a joy! I bet I can make a bigger one no problem.

HAHA

Here we go.

Was a little worried about the weight but it should be fine at this stage. HELLA sawdust off this badboy.

And then the problems began.

This is so beautiful. And sanded so nicely. And it’s so screwed. Firstly, this was too wide for the chuck so I had to turn it some more and ruin the most beautiful sanding I’ve ever done.

All was going well for now until the second my chisel hit the material, it went flying off. Okay so I guess the lip at the base of the bowl isn’t tall enough. I’ll... do some more.

And some more.

And some more.

After 5 times that the bowl flew off and I modified it to work, the last one was my final straw. The chuck just broke it. I give up.

Bleak

So bonus silly little thing!

Kind of a faux spoon or something. I don’t have the time to manually chisel out the spoon part before our final class but I do have those tools at home.
