LATHING MALLET

This week I felt overwhelmed. I realized I didn’t have much time to do a fun mallet, something I’m pretty sad about I really wanted to recreate something like this.

But with that lack of time in mind, I decided to work off of last weeks cork handle to make my mallet. Step one was seeing about what size that is.

and look at that it was a pretty close fit to a bit we already had.

now i make my mallet head, not going for a particular shape wanted to make an asymmetrical kinda guy. nothing crazy, still a joy to turn cork. You can see here that I was marking my 90 degree spots for drilling into.

STEP 2: Make the Jig

using the bandsaw i loosely cut out the paddle looking shape and went to the lathe. my paddle never held! it got scary, it would fly off the lathe with minimal chiseling.

luckily i found another paddle in the scrap section that seemed to have some of the stem already turned a bit.

i gave it a go and it started chipping and breaking so bad it too wouldn’t hold.

so i gave up and decided to just use the drill press a relative eyeball procedure. Looks pretty nice 2 me

after drilling my holes i realized my handle was too small for the hole so i dropped some sawdust in, and glued it up!

Let’s hope it works.
